My mission in life is to educate all mankind on the joys of Jell-O Shots.  These are my known recipes, all tried and true.  If you care to share yours with all mankind, as I have, please send them to Al@JelloShotsRUs.com and I will add them to the list here.  I am not in this for profit.

My muse, one of the Lloyd's of NOLA, whacked me for not plagiarizing his recipes correctly.  Since he introduced me to what has become my passion/obsession, and he is my Lieutenant, it seemed prudent to follow his original recipes ... but exactly?  Nope, not exactly.  I back-off the Secondary Liquor volume to one-third cup while he uses one-half cup.  The flavor is stronger his way.  You can certainly use any combination as long as the total is one full cup of booze.  Like most recipes, this isn't science and we aren't NASA, so if we screw up and the shots taste nasty, we've only wasted a few ounces of gelatin and a cup of booze.  So far in my journey to find the perfect Jell-O Shot, I have yet to encounter a Jell-O Shot I did not consume.  Hmmm, that doesn't sound good, does it?  Kind of ruins my credibility, huh?  Oh well, my recipes are free so that makes them worth zero dollars anyway.

A very knowledgeable relative pointed out that adding real fruit juice will enhance the flavor.  Sounds like good advice to me.  I haven't had the opportunity to try it myself, but am expecting to reduce the cold water by 1/4 cup and then add 1/4 cup of juice.  This make sense with orange, pineapple, cranberry, grape, lemon and lime Jell-O recipes ... not sure where to get cherry juice off the top of my head and maraschino cherry juice would be too sweet.  This topic will be explored further, so stay tuned.  My wife has pointed out that boiling the juice would be bad and that the Jell-O may not dissolve in just 3/4 cups of boiling water.  As you can see, this topic is actively being discussed and evaluated.

I have some new recipes, three and one-half from Debbie H. (Thanks!), three I made up (without any outside influence) and some I scavenged off the Web from sites like mine (but that aren't nearly as helpful and informative, of course).  The number of recipes has surpassed twenty!  That's a milestone ... next goal: fifty.

All that to say many of these recipes changed on the feast day of St Fidelis of Sigmaringen (April 22nd for non-Catholics) in the year 2004.

Let's get to it then.

The basic principle behind all Jell-O Shots is to substitute alcohol for the second cup of water (the cool liquid) the recipe on the box states to add after the gelatin powder has dissolved in the boiling cup of water.  In a pinch you can use a coffee maker to heat the water if you're in a hotel.  You do need a 'frig to cool the shots enough to solidify.

Most of these recipes use Vodka as the base, but I do have some Tequila recipes, some Coconut Rum recipes and one Southern Comfort recipe ... so far.

One three ounce box makes 20 to 25 one ounce cup shots, more in paper cups and fewer in the clear hard-plastic cups which cost more ... but those usually have little individual lids which are nice when you need to carry the Jell-O Shots in a cooler or maybe your shirt pocket.

For the Chocolate Cherry recipe below, I use a plain ordinary drinking straw as a pipette to add one drop of Kahlua® to each shot, holding about 1/8" of liquid in the straw by covering the upper end of the straw with my forefinger.  As the shots gel, the drop you add will make a "tracer" through the shot and maybe stop part-way down for a nice visual affect.  I wish I could state this always works, but I cannot predict the gel time very well yet.  If you are using the paper cups (over the clear hard plastic cups) you won't be able to see the Kahlua® anyway.  You have probably inferred I recommend using the clear, hard plastic cups: they have lids, they stack nicely, they present well and are more sanitary since they are covered ... and you can safely throw them across tables in the Super Dome: Go long, Al!

During my research, I have encountered folks that choose to use one large container for the Jell-O and then spoon mouthfuls into cups ... maybe even just eat spoonfuls.  I have also read of using ice-cube trays and then taking a hot knife to loosen and remove them.  While I do not condone such behavior, there is no scriptural basis for lewdly licking around the inside of the cup to free the shot before sensuously slurping it down.  Ummmmm, Jell-O Shots!  That is the traditional and socially accepted way to consume shots, but it is not dogma.  I mention that practice here so I cannot be considered prejudiced against them.  After all, their tongues may not be long enough to tickle the Jell-O out of the cup and we all know it's morally wrong to judge someone on the basis of their physical traits.  We cannot choose those traits, they are gifts to be celebrated.  Yeck!  That was smarmy-sweet, wouldn't you say?  Being PC makes me feel so ... so ... so greasy.  Yeck!
